Rajasthan’s Gandhi Nagar: A railway station wholly operated by women

Rajasthan’s Gandhi Nagar Railway Station has become the first non-suburban station to be run by women staff. From the station master to the pointsman, all the operations at this station are carried out by women.

The initiative to empower women staff in the Railways to handle operations was announced in 2018, said a news report.

Situated in the Delhi-Jaipur route, the railway station comes under the Jaipur division in The North Western Railway (NWR). The passenger footfall is over 15,000 per day and over 50 trains are scheduled at the station.

At the moment, there are at least 2,885 women staff working in the North Western Railway zone. They handle responsibilities and roles like – station master, loco pilot, track maintenance, diesel shed, booking clerk, workshop engineer, khalasi, women personnel of the Railway Protection Force, etc.

In 2017, Matunga Railway Station in Mumbai became the first suburban station to be operated entirely by women, said the report. It has also entered the Limca Book of Records.

The idea behind deputy women entirely has been for their personal and professional well-being, apart from the organization benefitting from it, said the report.
