What does it take to shape DEI in the organization?

It is important for organizations to visualize what diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) will look like at the workplaces to determine the approach.

Walking into a room that only consists of one gender and doing the best to understand their jokes! Waiting anxiously to be invited to be a part of those casual conversations. Wanting to voice your opinion when asked and yet interrupted multiple times as if one is invisible.

The above are some reasons why a workplace needs DEI. Diversity in the workplace matters because physical diversity also brings diversity of thoughts. Diversity is about having representations from multiple spectrums in the organization.

Equity is to ensure that every member gets fair opportunities. Inclusion is feeling welcomed within an organization without explicitly using verbal cues.

Organizations brainstorm to figure out how to make their company more diverse, but underestimate the importance of inclusion and equity. Without these, diversity can never be achieved. In order to have multiple representations across teams, designing policies and practices becomes imperative.

Inculcate DEI in organization’s value system: DEI is about making employees understand why stepping out of their comfort becomes essential. Addressing mindsets and behaviors necessary for an organization to grow is also DEI in action. One way to do this is by consistently investing in training programs internally or externally.

Translate DEI into everyday activities: Setting DEI objectives, and quantifying them as part of performance measurement alone will bring changes. Make sure employees understand the ‘why’ behind such initiatives. Abstract ideas are hard to achieve, whereas specific ones provide more clarity.

Walk the talk:  Research states that employees of an organization are prone to behave like their immediate leaders. Hence, enacting DEI culture will speak volumes than preaching DEI culture.

Create DEI Champions: Organizations will be surprised to find that their employees will be willing to accept DEI-related changes sooner than they anticipated. However, recognizing and rewarding DEI champions will accelerate the acceptance process.

Understanding how every aspect of DEI builds upon oneself and others will create a work environment that is equitable and inclusive of all individuals. People enter the world of work and advance their careers despite the unevenness in advantage, opportunity, privilege, and power. When organizational leaders acknowledge their barriers, counter inequity, and set clear goals, they signal a commitment that becomes the foundation of diversity and inclusion efforts.
