Two women and the Oscar glory: The Elephant Whisperers bags coveted award

The Elephant Whisperers, a documentary directed by Kartiki Gonsalves and produced by Guneet Monga, becomes the first-ever Indian production to win the prestigious Oscars.

Directed by Kartiki Gonsalves and produced by Guneet Monga, the production won the Oscars in the Best Documentary Short Category.

The film streaming on Netflix becomes the first Indian production to win the coveted awards— at the 95th Academy Awards held on March 12.

The others in the fray included Haulout, How Do You Measure a Year?, The Martha Mitchell Effect and Stranger At The Gate.

The film follows the story of a tribal couple Bellie and Bomman in the Mudhumalai Tiger Reserve in Tamil Nadu as they adopt two orphan elephant calves.

Guneet dedicated the award to her family and women on the whole. She tweeted, “Tonight is historic as this is the first-ever Oscar for an Indian production. The film is Kartiki’s debut and has been shot over a period of time, presenting a beautiful story of human beings and nature.
