The world of fashion is getting inclusive; here is why

In recent times, the fashion industry across the globe has woken up to the need for expanding their horizon. From inclusive shows to more body diversity of models– what’s causing the scene to change for the better?

Diversity is non-negotiable

Recently Milan Fashion Week responded to the calls of getting diverse, presenting the works of designers who are not Italians but feel Italians. The initiative by Haitian-Italian designer Stella Jean, who founded the ‘We Are Made in Italy’ movement has brought about Vietnamese, Indians, etc. to showcase their works. The fashion week also saw designers echoing that it was not just important to have more diverse models but also to have more diversity in the creative teams.

ESG is the new mantra

On the other hand, the push for ESG or Environmental, Social, and Governance framework in the fashion industry has brought the focus on working hours, structure and diversity in leadership, fair wages, job security, gender, and race discrimination, apart from safety and hygiene. Reports say that these are due to rising pressure from customers and investors. There is a growing demand for representing women and gender equality in the supply chain, and companies signing on to the Women’s Empowerment Principles (WEP).

SM rules

The power of the social media is another reason for the shake-up, say some. With more designers coming forward to embrace the different types of bodies, a deviation from the fashion runways only presenting the slimmer bodies, the fashion industry is aware of how SM is responsive to their actions.

They have also understood the need to respond to the feedback and expectations of Gen Zs and millennials who question outdated concepts. In the age of fashion influencers who rule the roost through insta reels, the reactions have only been pervasive.
