BCCI’s ‘game changer’: Equal fee for men and women cricketers

In a major move, the BCCI has announced that men and women cricketers will now receive the same fee.

BCCI secretary Jay Shah, who made the announcement on Twitter, said that this was the BCCI’s first step towards tackling discrimination. “We are implementing a pay equity policy for our contracted BCCI Women cricketers. The match fee for both Men and Women Cricketers will be the same as we move into a new era of gender equality in Indian Cricket,” he tweeted.

He added, “The BCCI Women cricketers will be paid the same match fee as their male counterparts. Test (INR 15 lakhs), ODI (INR 6 lakhs), T20I (INR 3 lakhs). Pay equity was my commitment to our women cricketers and I thank the Apex Council for their support. Jai Hind,” he added.

The decision has been applauded by women cricketers. Former Indian captain, Mithali Raj, called it a historic move. She pointed out that the pay equity policy and the WIPL next year would be game changers.

The decision to conduct Women’s IPL was approved by the BCCI in its 91st annual general meeting. Women’s cricket in India has been making news in the last few years. They won the first silver medal in the recently-concluded Commonwealth Games and clinched the 7th win in Asia Cup.
