In a workplace, inclusion is vital as it focuses on building new capabilities and driving excellence and innovative business solutions toward the organization’s growth and success.
Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion are more than just a C-suite conversation. Leaders are role modeling in driving the DEI agenda from the forefront as they understand that merely attaining the set diversity representation will not result in inclusion. While building inclusive work environments, organizations must realize that it is important to create opportunities for every individual, irrespective of their diverse background and abilities.
It is important to identify the gaps at regular intervals and take adequate measures to offer fair treatment, opportunity, and advancement. In recent years, leaders are beginning to understand the component of inclusion in the workplace as it enables them to benefit from the competitive advantage of employing diverse talent.
For a successful DEI journey in an organization, we need to identify and enable a system that ensures equal opportunity and access to resources in a highly collaborative environment through some essential components:
- Conduct Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion policies orientation during the induction process for new hires
- Conduct regular sensitization sessions/workshops on non-conscious biases and inclusive language
- Offer equal opportunities for career development programs to employees
- Ensure every employee feels safe and valued through the workplace safety code of conduct
- Invest in building a sense of belonging and psychological safety for employees towards the organization
- Communicate the organization’s DEI goals to all employees
- Conduct workplace climate surveys – an avenue to identify the key challenges facing different groups of people in the workplace
- Train managers to understand and practice diversity hiring, support flexible workers and help understand the work-life challenges of employees
- Value employees’ diverse thoughts and uniqueness – a key to innovation and business growth
- Create opportunities for employees to voice their opinion or concerns during townhall sessions and team meetings
- Encourage flexible-work options which cater to the aspirations of diverse talent including the millennial population at the workplace
- Secure leadership commitment and accountability to drive DEI goals in the organization
Inclusion starts at the top. As leaders “walk the talk” to promote Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, managers must develop and effectively engage with the diverse workforce with adequate skills and capability building.
For an inclusive and collaborative work environment, it is critical to focus on building leadership competencies and improving people management at the individual, team, and organizational levels.
