With fewer women-led Indian startups, here is an initiative by Google that could bring about a change. According to news reports, the tech giant will fund startups of Indian women through the Google India Digitization Fund (IDF).
Google CEO Sundar Pichai has revealed that about $300 million of the $10 billion Google for India Digitization Fund will focus on women-run startups. Earlier reports said that only 15% of unicorns in India have at least one woman founder, and the number of startups with only female founders is also low. Several reasons have been cited for the same, including lack of funds, and networking opportunities, to name some.
The reports added that startups are a thriving sphere where women can make an impact. More women-led startups will offer an impetus to women’s workforce participation.
News reports quoted Sanjay Gupta, Country Manager & VP, Google India, during the Google for India event, saying that they would be seeking support for early-stage companies with an emphasis on women-led startups.
