At a time when Hollywood is trying hard to up its gender inclusion game, here is some good news for movie buffs.
The Oscar nomination list this year is a line-up of stories on women. Be it Tar, Women Talking, or Black Panther: Wakanda focusing on female warriors’, the nominations comprise remarkable stories around women.
The 95th Academy Awards, or the Oscars, will be presented on March 12th. One of the most prestigious awards in the film world, the Oscars, with its women-centric list this year, makes a welcome statement.
Far from being diverse or equitable
However, it is a small step in the mammoth task of transformation. Hollywood has seen a lot of controversy for the last few years, with #MeToo triggering a series of discussions around gender parity and sexism in the industry.
From studio executives to filmmakers, the industry is a man’s world, as data has revealed. Research by UCLA says that only three women filmmakers have won the Best Director award so far and over 80% of the top bosses in studios and the senior management are men.
Earlier studies like The USC Annenberg Inclusion Initiative report found fewer women and people of color directing big projects. Another report from the Center for the Study of Women in Television and Film at San Diego State University found a dip in the number of women directors and women working behind the scenes the previous year.
