Menopause a challenge for women in the workplace

A survey in the US has highlighted how menopause challenges women’s workforce participation and yet receives little acknowledgment and support.

The ‘Menopause in the Workplace’ survey from Carrot Fertility has shown that 79% of the women surveyed say working in the menopausal phase is challenging.

According to news reports, by 2025, over 1.1 billion women worldwide would have undergone menopause.

The survey was conducted to discover the adverse effects of menopause on careers, identify resources available to menopausal women, and increase awareness to destigmatize it in the workplace.

The survey sample of about 1000 women found out that the most challenging decade for women in the workplace was the 50s due to menopause.

The report said that a whopping 77% of respondents felt uncomfortable discussing the phase with executives, while 63% admitted to being uncomfortable talking with human resources, and 58% didn’t want to discuss it with their immediate supervisor.

According to studies, in India, the menopausal age for women on average is around 46 years, compared to 51 years among women in the West.
