Managing workplace negativity

Of late, I am sensing negativity mushrooming in my organization. I am coming across many negative rumours and incorrect assumptions about the company’s policies and procedures. Our organization regularly sends out newsletters on industry happenings, and one of them, because of faulty information, is now looked at as some problem burgeoning in our organization.

How do I stop this mounting negativity?

Regards,

Worried Head – Organizational Development

Dear Worried,

Some people radiate negativity, and they are in every organization. They always have complaints against the management, and they are never satisfied with their jobs. Negativity is harmful. It can lead to distrust within a team, a decrease in employee engagement, unwanted gossip, or even liability issues if it devolves into harassment.

In all of these circumstances, leaders of the organization will require good control over the situation and what they communicate. Most of the problems are solved by proper communication. Communicate the truth – whether on the upper management’s decisions on various policies or changes or corporate downsizing etc. Sometimes such decisions are not completely understood by the employees.

A problem-solving team is a must. The team can include the victims of the negative rumours. Identify the exact cause and take steps to improvise it. If it is about ‘bad ethics’, identify the cause and clear the air. Develop an action plan along with the team.

Here are some basic tips to help get you started:

Identify the cause

  • Observation is the key to identifying the mushrooming negativity

Create a positive work culture

  • Recognition and motivate your employees

Encourage open communication

  • Value your employees’ opinions

Trust your employees

  • Keep your employees informed about organizational decisions

Create a culture of growth

  • Provide room for growth through various training sessions

With these tips, we hope to help you prevent negativity and build a happy, productive, and positive work environment.
