India tops in number of women pilots

At almost 15%, the number of women pilots in India is at least 3 times the global average.

While there is a lot of room for improvement in India’s gender diversity across fields, here is one field that stands apart. It looks like the sky is not even the limit for women here. India has three times more women pilots taking the skies, according to news reports. While the global average stands at 5%, India boasts of around 15% of the pilots being women.

Union Civil Aviation Minister, Jyotiraditya Scindia, answered a question in the Parliament recently, saying, “Globally, according to the International Society of Women Airline Pilots, around 5 percent of pilots are women. In India, the share of women pilots is significantly higher – at around 15 percent,” he said, according to news reports.

And, more efforts are being made to improve the number of women and men pilots. The ministry is looking to have more flying training organizations or FTOs in the airports in cities like Salem, Bhavnagar, Kadapa, Hubballi, and Kishangarh.
