Can you recount some memorable milestones in DEI from your career?

One of the most memorable milestones in my career was achieved during my leadership of the Target in India team. Through our investment in insights, strategy, and continuous learning efforts, we witnessed remarkable progress, including substantial growth in the representation of women at all organizational levels, with women constituting 41% of our workforce. Additionally, we achieved a remarkable 151% increase in the number of women in leadership positions within the organization.

One of the standout achievements of this journey was the development of Target Elevate, an industry-leading platform specifically tailored to empower women in technology. This platform has played a pivotal role in advancing the careers of countless women, providing them with the tools, resources, and community needed to excel in their professional journeys.

DEI operates in the VUCA world; what do you think are the challenges that come with it?

VUCA (Volatility, Uncertainty, Complexity, Ambiguity) is the reality of today and this presents both challenges and opportunities for positive change in the midst of chaos. One of the primary challenges faced in the context of DEI is the complexity of the issues involved. When dealing with DEI in a VUCA world, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed and unsure about where to begin.

It’s not unusual for organizations to become entangled in the intricacies of DEI challenges, leading to difficulties in maintaining a clear focus on simplicity and the ultimate impact of achieving broader DEI objectives. Nonetheless, adopting a strategy and action plan that prioritizes simplicity can be a potent tool for making substantial progress. Taking that initial step forward represents the crucial first move towards creating a meaningful impact.
