While the IITs are going global in recent times, the campuses of the premier institution in India have been seeing a lot of action on the diversity front.
According to news reports, IIT- Delhi is making its portals a safe space for LGBTQIA+ students. The efforts are being taken by a collective called Indradhanu on campus. The collective that began with 14 members has 250 now, added the news report. In February, Indradhanu held the first queer parade for IIT Delhi.
The collective has a website that discusses “raising awareness on issues relating to the LGBTQ+ community and advocating an inclusive campus experience for all.” The website also lists programs, campaigns, and projects related to the group.
Sensitization programs are being carried out on diversity, apart from infrastructural changes like Gender neutral washrooms. The collective is taking steady steps to create change on the campus to prevent discrimination and microaggressions against the group, stated the report.
The focus on the group is more so because stigma and discrimination can deal a harsh blow to students in their prime years.
