An inclusive work-culture, side-hustles, downtime, flexibility – Studies reveal that these are some of Gen Z’s key expectations from their workplaces. Contrast this with Gen X’s and Boomers’ preferences: Job stability, a structured work environment, formal communication, etc.
Here’s the tricky reality: Gen X, Boomers (in some cases, early millennials) dominate senior management roles, where key rules about organizational processes are made. These decisions are made for the entire employee base, which is largely made up of Gen Zs and millennials. So, workplaces today are faced with varied and often conflicting scenarios. For instance:
- Gen Zs, born between 1997 and 2012, are digital natives. They are the first generation that’s never lived without the Internet. Not surprisingly, they prefer communicating over informal online chats and calls, while senior leaders often prefer face-to-face interactions.
- Gen Zs prefer an easy-going work environment – A recent survey by a TV streaming service revealed that 84% of Gen Z admitted to streaming movies at work. Gen Zs place greater importance on the quality of work rather than the time invested. But Boomers and Gen X find such acts disrespectful and irresponsible – a study by Intelligent.com found that 65% of hiring managers believe recent college graduates are entitled and 55% believe they lack work ethic.
- For Gen Zs, a fair and inclusive work-culture, where there is trust and psychological safety for all, especially the disadvantaged, is crucial. While these points may be important for the seniors too, other aspects such as company commitment and job security take precedence.
- For Gen X and Boomers, steady and step-by-step career progression was/is critical. Gen Zs also prioritize career growth – in fact, a recent Indian study found that 80% of Gen Zs greatly value career growth, even more than salary. But here’s the thing: They do not always seek linear career growth. Gen Zs consider side hustles, being able to contribute to their company’s strong culture through participation in DEI initiatives, embracing different experiences, engaging in purpose-driven work, etc. as valuable growth.
