Women in STEM: The India Story

Women in STEM – The India Story is a landmark, pan-India research by Avtar and CII, in examining the realities shaping women’s participation in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics in India. At a time when India is advancing toward its Viksit Bharat 2047 vision, the study offers a comprehensive view of how gender, education, work structures, and socio-cultural norms intersect across the STEM talent pipeline.

Drawing on secondary research, sectoral data, and extensive analysis across technology, manufacturing, science, and engineering, the report maps women’s journeys from education to leadership. It highlights critical drop-offs, systemic barriers, and enabling practices influencing entry, progression, and retention.

By integrating evidence, best practices, and actionable recommendations, the report serves as a strategic roadmap for organizations, policymakers, and institutions to reimagine inclusive talent pathways, strengthen leadership pipelines, and build a future-ready STEM ecosystem where women do not just participate—but lead and thrive.
