Transpersons to be appointed by Karnataka Police

8 transpersons will be appointed as special reserve sub-inspectors and Scene Of Crime Officers (SOCO) in Karnataka.

A few months after announcing the reservation of 1 % for transpersons in government services, Karnataka on Tuesday sought applications to fill 8 posts in an ongoing recruitment drive for special reserve subinspectors and Scene Of Crime Officers (SOCOs). The notification said that men, women, and transpersons are eligible. The applicants have to be a graduate or an equivalent from a UGC-recognized university and must produce a gender status certificate from the district magistrate.

News reports also said that the State Forensics Laboratory is inviting applications for about 206 posts. Among these, 3 are for transpersons.

In 2015, Preethika Yashini from Tamil Nadu became the first transperson in India inducted into the police force. Prithika made news when she approached the Madras High Court after the Tamil Nadu Uniformed Services Recruitment Board (TNUSRB) rejected her application. After training, Prithika joined the police force as a sub-inspector in 2017.

Across India, marginalized communities like transpersons are being included in all spheres of life. Governments are playing their role in inclusion; it is necessary to make workplaces across sectors safe spaces
