IIT-Madras has proposed a sports quota to boost diversity in the IITs.
As per news reports, a recently-concluded meeting witnessed suggestions about allowing students, who excel in the field of sports at state, national and international levels, to study at the IITs.
The reports quoted the minutes of the 55th IIT council meeting released by the Union Ministry of Education.
The minutes read: “In this regard, implementation modalities and timelines for the academic session 2024-25 may be prepared in consultation with JEE Apex Board (JAB).”
IIT-Madras Director V Kamakoti said that he proposed the idea at the meeting, adding that the idea was welcomed. “The notion of sports quota exists in the higher education system in India. We are now looking at the possibility of bringing it into the IIT system. In principle, all IITs have welcomed the proposal but we need to work on the modalities of its implementation,” the reports quoted him as saying.
