Soon on TV: Content on women empowerment and national relevance

Every satellite TV channel in India, including private ones, will now have to broadcast programs that carry themes of “national importance and social relevance” like women’s empowerment, every day for at least 30 minutes.

The new rule comes in the wake of the Union Cabinet amending the policy guidelines for satellite TV news channels— the first since 2011, according to reports. The ‘Guidelines for Uplinking and Downlinking of Satellite Television Channels in India, 2022’ was approved recently.

News reports quoted a statement as saying that the amendments have been issued alongside decisions to improve the ease of business. The statement said every channel must, “undertake public service broadcasting for a minimum period of 30 minutes in a day on themes of national importance and social relevance.”
