SC to hear plea on menstrual leave on February 24

On February 24, the Supreme Court will hear a plea on menstrual leaves for female students in educational institutions and working women across sectors.

A Public Interest Litigation (PIL) has sought action by all state governments to frame rules and extend menstrual leaves or period leaves for female students in educational institutions and for women across organizations.

The PIL said, “The Menstrual period has been knowingly or unknowingly ignored by the society, the legislature, and other stakeholders in the society except for a few organizations and state governments, which raises a question on the intent of the whole society about recognizing and respecting women rights, especially during their difficult times related to different stages of maternity, the monthly leave to working women during their menstrual period.”

The PIL also sought measures by different parties to comply with the Section 14 of the Maternity Benefit Act, 1961. The Act addresses almost all problems faced by women during pregnancy and maternity.
