On February 24, the Supreme Court of India disposed of a plea seeking period leaves for women employees and students in educational institutions, observing that it came under the policy domain.
The bench comprising the Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud and Justices PS Narasimha and JB Pardiwala pointed out there was a policy dimension in the case. They added that the petitioner could file a representation before the Union Ministry of Women and Child Development.
“Having regard to the policy dimension in the case, the petitioner may approach the Women and Child Ministry to file a representation,” news reports quoted the CJI as saying.
The petition said that several companies provided period leaves for women, and a few state governments took cognizance and framed regulations. It also sought the effective implementation of Section 14 of the Maternity Benefit Act.
