Reports highlight lack of diversity & inclusion in Hollywood

When the buzz around diversity, equity, and inclusion is growing across industries, Hollywood, one of the largest film industries in the world, has displayed a lack of diversity

The USC Annenberg Inclusion Initiative report found fewer women and people of color directing the major projects last year. A report from the Center for the Study of Women in Television and Film at San Diego State University found a dip in the number of women directors and women working behind the scenes, compared to 2021.

The report in Rolling Stone said that in 2020, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences released the new diversity and inclusion standards for eligibility to win Best Picture. The standards covered on-screen themes, creative leadership, industry access, and audience development. It also listed requirements like the inclusion of women, people of color, LGBTQ+ people, and people with cognitive or physical disabilities or who are deaf or hard of hearing.

The two reports’ findings are a telling sign of the regress in the scene in recent times.
