Remote work is set to be a legal right in The Netherlands

The Netherlands has become the first country to make remote working a legal right.

It is yet to receive the nod from the Dutch Senate, which will be the last step in its adoption, according to news reports.

The European country was one of the earliest adopters of the remote work model, which can also be in the form of work from home option, even before Covid.

According to reports, at least 14% of its workforce was working remotely before the pandemic.

The latest legislation makes it necessary for companies to explain why a request for work-from-home or remote working is not accepted. Under the current law, companies can reject these requests.

The Netherlands is showing the way for the rest of the world. Spain has a law that bars discrimination against employees working remotely, disallowing them from being sidelined for promotions. However, no such laws exist in the UK and the US
