The NALSAR University of Law recently introduced a menstrual leave policy, after carrying out a survey and setting up a committee to ascertain the importance of the policy on the campus.
According to a report by Live Law, NALSAR is the first University in the country to introduce the policy.
As per the policy, one menstrual leave per month, similar to medical leaves will be permitted for students, faculty, and staff.
The report added that aggregate attendance for students was fixed at around 67%.
A Menstrual Committee was constituted to know more about the areas of conflict, submit recommendations, carry out sensitization, and acknowledge the need for medical supplies and sanitary napkin dispensers on the campus. Apart from these, a weekly visit by a gynecologist to ensure their health. A study was conducted by the Menstrual Leave Policy Group NALSAR to understand the problems faced by those during menstruation and found that 50% of them experienced cramps and dysmenorrhea.
The policy is among other steps taken so far by the University to become inclusive like gender neutral washrooms and set up infrastructure for persons with disabilities.
