More women are entering boardrooms, and they are mostly occupying the posts of independent directors, says a news report.
The Companies Act 2013 mandates the appointment of at least one woman director by listed companies. Following the mandate, stock market regulators sought that large listed companies have a woman as an independent director or those not related to the company owners. The following year only 6% of women occupied the roles, and the representation of women in Nifty 500 companies rose to 18% in 2022, as per data.
Women account for 24.7 percent of all independent directors, revealed the news report quoting the latest available data from tracker primeinfobase.com. Their representation went down to 19.7 percent for overall directorships.
India lags behind other countries that do not have such mandates, added the news report. France has over 44% women in director roles, and Germany has about 30% women in these roles.
