With a gold medal in Lawn Bowls this week, the Indian women’s team has added impetus to the country’s run at the ongoing Commonwealth Games. Behind the win is a group of gritty women who never gave up after missing a medal in the last performance during the 2018 games!
The team comprising Rupa Rani Tirkey, Pinki, Nayanmoni Saikia, and Lovely Choubey has turned the spotlight on the game played in singles and pairs for Indian sports enthusiasts.
The four-member team emerged victorious beating South Africa, clinching the first-ever medal for India in Lawn Bowls, which is probably unheard of in most parts of the country.
England and Australia have dominated Lawn Bowls in the last few years, and the game has been part of the CWG since the inaugural tournament, as per news reports.
Lawn Bowls involve more wrist movement and accuracy in releasing the ball than fitness.
With their victory etched in gold, the story behind it is inspiring. Beginning their training just over a decade ago, the team that lost in the quarter-finals in the previous CWG tournament chose never to give up as they underwent rigorous practice sessions ahead of the event.
With each player in different vocations like police constable, sports trainer, sports officer, and sports administrator, the will to perform better offered them the morale to try till they made the winning shot!
