From the Ground Up: Gopinath Govindan on Inclusion, Culture & Sustainability

Building a workplace that’s deeply humane and high-performing begins at the roots – with culture, values, and a relentless commitment to inclusion. In this episode of DiversiTea, a podcast series by Avtar Group and CII, Gopinath Govindan, Director of Human Resources at Apraava Energy, reflects on this belief and his career built on trust, adaptability, and purpose. Having transitioned from a background in science to HR, Gopinath offers insights into the evolving world of work and what it takes to integrate inclusion and sustainability into business strategy.

From Science to Strategy: The Power of Early Trust

For Gopinath, the shift from science to HR was more than a career move – it was a lesson in trusting the process. “Trust in my boss helped. The culture of a place helps create a bond too.” That learning continued to influence his approach to leadership and people development.

Culture is Dynamic, Not Fixed

When asked whether long tenures risk creating cultural rigidity, Gopinath says, “Cultures evolve and must align with the line of business and core values.” According to him, organizations must embrace the dynamic evolution of culture, treating it as a living system rather than a static framework. His cross-industry experience in IT and HR reinforced a universal truth: “People respond to you the way you treat them. At the core, people are the same. They want to be treated with respect.”

Inclusion as a Pillar of Sustainability

Gopinath strongly believes that inclusion is not an isolated initiative – it is a key aspect of a broader sustainability agenda. “Sustainability is much larger than inclusion. It needs to be embedded into how the business operates,” he explained. From investments to partner relationships and regulatory engagement, sustainability is woven into Apraava’s vision. “This is not just about employees. It’s about walking together – with stakeholders, partners, and authorities,” he added.

Metrics That Matter

On the subject of tracking sustainability, Gopinath cautions against relying solely on surface-level metrics. “Engagement scores are important, but the response rate is more telling. Similarly, it is important to know – are people taking leave? Are they prioritizing health check-ups? That’s where real culture lives,” he said. For him, sustainability must reflect in everyday practices, not just annual reports.

Adapting for a Sustainable Future

With changing employee expectations, adaptability is not optional – it’s essential. “Just as we adapt to customers, we need to adapt to people. Agility is a prerequisite for being in business today,” he remarked. Sustainability, in his view, is a value system that evolves over time and must be rooted in trust. “We shouldn’t wait for regulations like BRSR. The spirit behind the law is more important than the audit itself.”

From culture to compliance, and inclusion to innovation, Gopinath Govindan’s journey is a reminder that lasting impact is built from the ground up – through empathy, consistency, and intentional change.
