Flipkart has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Odisha Government to bring self-help groups and weavers into the E-commerce fold.
Under the Samarth program, the MoU with the Department of Mission Shakti, Government of Odisha, will enable self-help groups (SHGs), artisans, and weavers in the state, to sell goods online.
Sujata R Karthikeyan, Commissioner, Mission Shakti Department, was quoted by news reports as saying, “E-commerce is undoubtedly a new way to a better tomorrow. The e-commerce Industry is an ideal platform for providing opportunities and encouragement to women entrepreneurs who aspire to pursue entrepreneurship.”
News reports added that Samarth impacted many lives in states like Uttar Pradesh, Assam, and Jharkhand, etc., and that it benefitted 1.5 million households. It helped the sellers grow their businesses by 300%.
According to United Nations Conference on Trade and Development, technology was an important enabler, and e-commerce provided an ideal opportunity for empowering women entrepreneurs in developing countries.
