While Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently lauded India’s strides in the field of aviation with the highest number of women pilots, in his Independence Day speech, the sector is determined to do more. A four-member committee set up by Civil Aviation regulator DGCA will provide suggestions for achieving gender equality in the aviation sector in India.
The order passed recently by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) stated that the objective of this committee was to suggest steps that can usher in gender diversity.
Four senior officers have been appointed as members of the committee. These include Survita Saxena, Director (Operations); R P Kashyap, Director (Training); Pavan Malviya, Deputy Director (Administration); and Kavita Singh, Deputy Director (Aircraft Engineering Directorate).
“The committee will submit its report/recommendation within six months from the date of its constitution,” news reports quoting the order said.
The initiative aligns with the commitment of International Civil Aviation Organisations (ICAO). ICAO aims to promote participation of women and achieve an aspirational goal of 50-50 (women-men) by 2030 at all professional and higher levels of employment in the global aviation sector.
Professionals and stakeholders in the field have lauded the committee and said it would boost opportunities for women in the field. Aviation sector has a fair presence of women especially pilots.
