Indicating that age is just a number, Kamakshi Subramanian, a 94-year-old resident of Chennai and an active social worker, is all set to contest the upcoming Tamil Nadu urban local body elections.
Kamakshi, fondly known as Kamakshi Patti (grandmother in Tamil), has been an active crusader for the rights of citizens for decades now,
She will contest as an independent candidate for the post of ward councilor. She has been taking up local issues with government agencies to ensure top amenities and facilities are delivered and maintained in one of the densely populated suburbs of the city.
In the last few decades, her relentless efforts have fructified with the restoration of Karl Schmidt Memorial and a neighborhood park. She has also co-founded an organization called SPARK to fight for the rights of the people.
A popular figure in the locality, she is often the go-to person for all the residents with any complaints regarding the amenities maintained by the Greater Corporation of Chennai and other facilities like roads, water supply, etc.
According to reports, 74,383 candidates have filed their papers to contest in the 12,826 posts across 21 corporations, 138 municipalities, and 490 town panchayats in the upcoming Tamil Nadu urban local body elections.
Kamakshi Patti is probably the oldest among all contestants. Her courage to contest shows that age is no bar when you intend to do good and serve society.
